Our current facility has been a wonderful haven for wildlife for more than 14 years. During this time its reputation has grown enormously and admissions are now running at over 1000 a year.
HART Wildlife Rescue was founded early in 1996 by June and Bob Gibbs at their home in Overton as a result of a request from an RSPCA officer to overwinter some hedgehogs at Dellands. The Hampshire Animal Rescue Team, as the charity was originally known, has gradually grown and grown, and eventually outgrew the facilities at Dellands. This meant that sadly we had to close to new admissions at times as there was just not enough room!
However, a long fundraising campaign and a lot of planning and research has finally paid off, and HART has now moved to a new hospital in Medstead, which comes complete with an acre of meadow.
Here animals are cared for by the hospital manager, Charmian Greenland-Jones, Senior Animal Care assistant Caragh hunter, and a growing army of volunteers, who give their time and help in many ways – anything and everything from cleaning cages to the vital fundraising and event management.
This new centre has enabled Bob and June to have a home again, somewhere they can enjoy some peace and privacy. They will still remain actively involved in the centre but are now able to choose how and when instead of it being imposed on them.
Having completed the hospital building, we have now moved onto fundraising and planning for phase 2 – developing the external facilities for more birds and large mammals, and the study centre.
